Internet Performance Delivered right to your inbox

SXSW 2012: The Road Back To Austin Starts With Your Votes

While some of us at are still recovering from the epic parties (including our own), the innovative sessions and the great networking that took place at the 2011 South by Southwest Interactive (SXSW) festival in Austin, TX, others here are already in deep preparation for the 2012 event and we need your help!

We admit that we went a little rogue this past March in the city that likes to keep it weird but this time around, we are planning to follow the rules (Ok, MOST of them).  Our first step? Submit an actual presentation and hope everyone thinks the subject matter is as cool as we do. We’ve done our best to make DNS sexy and email delivery cool and now we want to show our loves of both off to the audience at SXSW.

Here’s how you can help in two minutes or less!

SXSW 2012

1. Check out our two proposals:

Exploring the Common Thread of Kick Ass Websites

Let’s be honest. When you go to access your favorite website, you don’t care how or why you get there: you just want it to work. It’s not until there’s a slowdown that you start to curse the very foundation of the Internet. So what exactly does make the Internet work? And what core technology do major websites like Twitter, Pandora, Mashable, HomeAway and more depend on to keep their site running at peak performance? Three little letters….DNS.

DNS is the Internet’s phone book. It looks up the website you are trying to access and directs you to the correct content. Not having DNS would be the equivalent of having a contact list full of phone numbers with no names – good for your text message bill, very bad for staying connected.

This session will take an in-depth look into why major websites outsource their DNS to experts and how it affects their bottom line. In addition, we will explore the advanced functionalities of managed DNS with case studies from top websites to learn how they are shaving critical time off web load times, efficiently managing and directing traffic and most critically, staying up and running at peak performance for their users 24/7/365.

Why Email Is For More Than Just Zombies

Despite some claims that email is a dead medium, that’s far from the truth. Email is alive and well and not just for marketing zombies. It may have lost its “cool factor” in today’s social media world, but try signing up for a social media account without an email. What about the receipts you get after returning a movie at RedBox or when you update your password with your ING Direct account? We challenge you to imagine a world without email. If the digital apocalypse happened right now and email had vanished, what would you do?

This talk will tear some holes in flawed “studies” and myths (“teens aren’t using it, so it’s going to go away!”) and talk about why this medium is crucial and here to stay. We’ll talk about the role of mobile and give anecdotal evidence on how important email is to our day-to-day personal and business lives. We’ll even give some high-level food for thought on how to convert the zombies that are doing email wrong from drip campaigns to transactional email to how social and email can work together. Email isn’t a medium for just zombies. We’ll show you how (and avoid any eaten brains in the process).
