Surf Without the Sharks: NXDomain Redirection Opt-Out

Today, Dyn Inc. announced DynDNS.com Internet Guide, our very own way to help the geeks of the world protect those that they love, while having a stable, fast, and redundant Recursive DNS service they themselves enjoy using.

At its core, the offering is a free, fast Recursive DNS service, built on our global network of anycast locations, and the Unbound DNS resolver. We currently have DynDNS.com Internet Guide deployed on two diverse anycast constellations, with nodes in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, Amsterdam (x2), Tokyo, and Hong Kong. We plan to add Palo Alto, Washington D.C., Newark, London, and Frankfurt next. That’s 7 sites today, with expansion to 12 in the very near future.

With this technology platform, we’re able to deliver value added services via DNS into the home. For example, DynDNS.com Internet Guide offers phishing protection and content category blocking powered by Barracuda Networks, a leader in email and web security. We offer personalized DNS blacklists, whitelists, and can correct common domain misspellings or mistakes and direct users to a landing page that can help guide their way on the web.

This functionality, called NXDomain Redirection (NXR, for short), is something that some of us love, and some of us hate. Some of us like that idea that our grandmother’s won’t be plagued with the renowned “page cannot be displayed” error, but rather guided to helpful landing page (yes, we put some ads on these pages to subsidize the free service).

For the geeks that don’t like NXR, you have a simple choice: after setting up your DynDNS.com Internet Guide Defense Plan – go to Advanced Settings, and click “Disable Landing Page.” This will disable NXR for your IP or block of IPs, but you’ll continue to receive the benefits of blacklists, whitelists, phishing protection, and content categorization.

Furthermore, for those of you on Dynamic IP addresses, you can link your Defense Plans to an existing DynDNS.com Dynamic DNS hostname – so your settings will follow you, no matter when or how your IP address changes. The system will automatically sync your Defense Plan settings around our network within a couple of minutes.

For Windows users starting out with DynDNS.com, I encourage you to download the DynDNS.com Update Client – it will help configure your computer for DynDNS.com Internet Guide automatically, after which you can go forth and customize a Defense Plan for yourself!

Cheers!
