That’s one small step for mail…
So you’ve signed up for Email Delivery? This is great news! You have taken a step, nay leap, or more appropriately a pole vault towards greater email deliverability. This means you’ve trusted Oracle Dyn to ensure your emails are delivered as expected, and we work around the clock to earn that trust.
If you’re new to the service or are just curious about it, consider this an introduction to how you will set up and interact with Email Delivery on our website. Maintaining your sender reputation, inbox placement, and content are a handful but with Dyn Email Delivery we help keep all that information in one place. Before our adventure begins you will want to be sure that you have Enrolled in DynID, your gateway to the online portal. As DynID is designed to be a single sign-on for all of your Dynect services, you may link Email Delivery to an existing DynID should you already have one.
Where it all begins
Once logged into the Email portal, you will be greeted with a toolbar at the top of your screen. This will be the roadmap for our journey through Email Delivery and all our portal has to offer. Where we will boldly go where billions of messages have gone before!
The first stop on our trip to improved deliverability is the Dashboard. This screen is your landing page for the Email Delivery portal and will reveal a brief overview of your account. On the left panel of your screen you will find a summary of your account’s basic sending statistics, each linking to the relevant detailed report.
Your account name is also selectable, where you can go to edit your credentials, and sending settings. There you can enable useful features like open- and click-tracking, furthering your insight into your deliverability.
Addressing the envelope
As helpful as a glimpse into your statistics can be, let’s take a look at the senders that drive these numbers. When using Email Delivery these email address are referred to as Approved Senders, indicating that they are permitted to send on behalf of this account. To add, edit, delete, and view these senders we’ll want to take a stroll over to the aptly named Approved Senders tab. These are the addresses that will be placed in your “From:” header.
This page offers a thorough summary of all senders within the selected account. Some key areas of interest include the SPF and DKIM columns. These email security features are integral to high deliverability, and should be a top priority for anyone on the platform. Clicking on the “Yes” or “No” links for SPF or DKIM will bring up a panel that illustrates the DNS records required to implement these security measures, both of which are a must when addressing message delivery and security.
Hovering over the Approved Senders tab will make the Custom Domains option appear. Here you will have the ability to setup your own custom tracking domains. This feature will enable you to utilize a more recognizable tracking link, helping to gain the trust of users clicking the links in your emails with a recognizable branding. Multiple custom tracking domains can be added, and you can select a different one for each approved sender if you so choose.
Square peg, square hole
We’ve seen some stats, clicked some links, and added some email address, but what about interacting with Email Delivery in other ways? That’s where the Integration tab comes in. Each account on the platform with its own API key, which is used to authenticate that account when using our Email REST API. You may generate new API keys as you please and obtain them from this section of the portal. The API can be used for sending and reporting, and offers an alternative to the online portal with its own set of advantages.
Below your key will be a thorough explanation of Postback URLs. For those unfamiliar, this gives you the ability to receive notifications from our platform when a message bounces, receives a spam complaint, or a recipient unsubscribes. These analytics grand you real-time information to address deliverability issues and be more prepared for your next sending campaign.
The bottom of this screen outlines X-Headers, custom user-defined headers that can be sent out with each message under the sub-account. Many find it helpful to include an x-header related to the sending campaign at the time, a subscription ID, or other value that can be easily associated with your sending. With this information it is much easier to tie your delivery statistics back to your sending list, often to address bounces, complaints, opens, or clicks.
At the helm
The Accounts tab is only visible to the master (top email admin) user on an account. Everyone else, close your eyes for the next few sentences! Here you can add, edit, and delete other sub-accounts under the master user.
Perhaps the most powerful tool on this page is the “Login as user” button (circled below), selectable to the right of each sub-account. With this small-yet-powerful icon you will be able to scope into any other sub-account under the master, making it easy to view reports and alter settings for your entire account.
There’s No Place Like 127.0.0.1
Our next stop may well be the shortest. A visit to the IP Manager tab will yield a small amount of very useful information. Here you will be able to determine which of your sub-accounts use shared IP addresses and which use dedicated IPs. Like the Accounts tab this is only available to the administrative master user.
When things go wrong
When messages cannot be delivered it is possible that recipient may find their way to the Suppression List. This list is a powerful tool that helps prevent some common factors that will hurt your reputation, most notably complaints and bounces. Oracle + Dyn Email Delivery will automatically add any email address that receives a spam complaint or has a message hard bounce. The entries will be displayed in a searchable list, as you can see below (addresses redacted).
Of course if whatever issue that recipient had becomes rectified they can be reactivated for sending. This can be accomplished via the portal with the click of a button. Your reputation is key to your deliverability, and the Suppression List is an integral part of that. If they instead remain on the suppression list we will ensure that no more messages are sent to that recipient until you update your sending list. This brings us to the final stop on our journey…
Graphs Or It Didn’t Happen
The key ingredient of deliverability? The successful delivery of a message, surprising I know! It is on the Reports tab that we can visualize the impact of all the work we’ve put in thus far and put a face to the deliverability on your account. The setup of the account, creation of approved senders, and every other part of Email Delivery culminates here. Clicking on the tab will bring up a more detailed summary of your sending than the Dashboard, with the ability to change the time range for the data.
While our travels end here, yours don’t have to! Our ever-evolving portal has a lot to offer you, and when combined with the efficiency and speed of our API there’s little you can’t deliver. Happy sending!
