To begin using your Dyn Standard DNS or Secondary DNS service, you must delegate (assign) the domain name to our servers. Here is our current list of nameservers:
| Server | IP Address |
|---|---|
| ns1.mydyndns.org (Required for Dyn Standard DNS) |
204.13.248.76 |
| ns2.mydyndns.org (Required for Dyn Standard DNS and Secondary DNS) |
204.13.249.76 |
| ns3.mydyndns.org | 208.78.69.76 |
| ns4.mydyndns.org | 91.198.22.76 |
| ns5.mydyndns.org | 203.62.195.76 |
If your domain is registered with Dyn, visit the Zone Level Services page and click the Domain Registration link for your domain name, then click the Edit Nameservers button. If you are using Dyn Standard DNS, simply click the Set to Dyn Standard DNS Nameservers button to automatically configure your domain.
If your domain is registered with another company, please see their documentation for instructions on changing your domain’s delegation.
Why is my zone inactive?
You may notice that your Dyn Standard DNS or Secondary DNS service is marked “inactive” on its overview page. This can indicate:
- The service is too new: If you purchased the service within the last hour, it has not been provisioned yet. Please wait and check again.
- Your domain is not delegated to the Dyn nameservers: You must assign the domain name to our nameservers before the service will activate completely. Please see the instructions above to delegate the domain name to the correct servers.
- Your domain is unregistered: You must register the domain before you can use Dyn Standard DNS or Secondary DNS. If you created a new domain name, please check to ensure you also purchased domain registration.
- Your domain’s delegation includes third-party nameservers: If you are using Dyn Standard DNS and third-party nameservers are listed in the delegation, the service will not activate. You may only use Dyn nameservers with Dyn Standard DNS.
How do I change DNS providers without downtime?
To avoid losing queries when switching to Dyn Standard DNS, please follow these instructions:
- Create the new Dyn Standard DNS service for your domain.
- Recreate the records from your old DNS provider in Dyn Standard DNS. By “mirroring” the zones, visitors will get identical results during the transition.
- Preactivate Dyn Standard DNS from its Preferences page, then wait two hours for the preactivation process to complete. This will load the records onto the nameservers.
- Change the nameserver delegation from your old provider to the Dyn nameservers using the above instructions.
- Wait three days. You should avoid making significant changes to your DNS records during this time. If you must, update the records with your old DNS provider as well.
- After three days, you may safely shut down your services with the old DNS provider.
This slow transition will ensure cached queries are still answered by your old provider, while new queries are answered by Dyn.
Delegating a Subdomain
Delegating a single subdomain to Dyn Standard DNS is easy. Please follow these steps to perform the subdomain delegation:
- Create Dyn Standard DNS: Purchase Dyn Standard DNS for the subdomain itself, e.g. dynamic.example.com.
- Create NS records: In your current zone file for your domain at the other DNS provider, you will need to create NS (NameServer) records. These NS records “redirect” queries for the specific subdomain to Dyn Standard DNS. For dynamic.example.com, these records would look like:
dynamic.example.com. 48600 IN NS ns1.mydyndns.org. dynamic.example.com. 48600 IN NS ns2.mydyndns.org. dynamic.example.com. 48600 IN NS ns3.mydyndns.org. dynamic.example.com. 48600 IN NS ns4.mydyndns.org. dynamic.example.com. 48600 IN NS ns5.mydyndns.org.
Please note the trailing “.” after each hostname.
Once these NS records have been created, queries for the subdomain will be answered by your Dyn Standard DNS zone.
.DE Domains in Dyn Standard DNS
Domains within the .DE TLD are troublesome. Mostly this is due to odd restrictions put on the domains by DENIC (the central registry for .DE domains). The primary problem is that DENIC requires domains to be pre-activated and also requires that the delegation for the domain list ALL nameservers which claim authority for the domain.
Because our Dyn Standard DNS system uses a total of 5 nameservers, this requires that the delegation for the .DE domain also list 5 nameservers and in many cases registrars only provide a delegation change form that lists up to 4 nameservers.
A secondary problem is that DENIC runs a suite of automated tests to determine if the name service being provided is “acceptable” to them. This suite of tests can fail for one or more reasons including transient network problems. If the tests fail the delegation change needs to be re-submitted. This may even occur multiple times.
The same applies for new domain registrations with the added pain that the registration itself fails unless some human intervention is applied.
To deal with this situation and make it possible for customers to use Dyn Standard DNS with .DE domains we are working with a third party registrar (domaindiscount24.net) to ensure that their registration and delegation update systems can fully support delegating .DE domains to our servers.
.SE Accredited Registrar
Dyn is an accredited registrar for the Swedish top domain, .se. Together with .SE, Dyn is working for positive development of the Internet in Sweden for the benefit of users and society at large. Our common goal is satisfied domain holders, regardless of whether they are large organisations or private persons.

Dyn handles personal information in a manner that is in accordance with the Swedish Personal Data Act (1998:204) and .SE’s integrity policy.
New Domains
- Verify that the domain you want to register is available.
- Create a Dyn Standard DNS zone for the domain in our system.
- Wait 1 hour to be sure the domain has been pre-activated in our system.
- Test the pre-activation by running one of these commands from a shell, prompt or terminal:
dig your-domain.de @ns1.mydyndns.org soa +norecurse
OR use the NameServer inspection tool provided by domaindiscount24.net
- Once the above test indicates that our nameservers are responding for the domain, submit the new domain registration via domaindiscount24.com being sure to list all 5 of our nameservers.
Existing Domains
- Create a Dyn Standard DNS zone for the domain in our system.
- Wait 1 hour to be sure the domain has been pre-activated in our system.
- Test the pre-activation by running one of these commands from a shell, prompt or terminal:
