Managed DNS Advanced Feature:
Round Robin Load Balancing

Distribute site load more evenly and efficiently with Dyn’s Round Robin Load Balancing, an advanced feature for DynECT Managed DNS clients.

How Dyn does it

Traditional Round Robin Load Balancing with DNS is accomplished by returning more than one IP address for a given hostname so as to spread the traffic evenly across various web servers. But while you may assume that users are being directed to each of these IP addresses equally, this is not the case.

By using the Round Robin Load Balancing feature on DynECT Managed DNS, you can distribute load amongst each of your IP addresses more evenly and efficiently and if one of your servers should fail, Dyn automatically removes it from the available pool of servers and evenly redistributes traffic load to the remaining active servers.

Site load times have never had it so good.

Why you need it

Here’s an example: Company X has five IP addresses for their website www.companyx.com. In typical Round Robin Load Balancing scenarios, the majority of traffic would go to the primary server, leaving the remaining minority traffic to be distributed amongst the remaining four servers. With Dyn, each individual DNS request can be answered with a different IP address from the pool of available servers, rather than returning all five possible IP addresses at once and leaving the decision of which one to connect to up to the client.

With our Round Robin Load Balancing solution, a dynamic subset of one or two addresses can be returned, enabling a truly balanced traffic solution.

Another example: what if one of your servers or locations in the pool of five has an outage? With Dyn’s advanced 24/7 monitoring, we detect this outage and seamlessly remove that server or location from rotation in real-time, evenly redistributing your web traffic between your remaining IP addresses.

Accomplish this with as little or as many IP addresses as you like: no limitations.

The Dyn Difference

By both eliminating the need for on-site hardware load balancers to be installed and balancing traffic load at the DNS level, you remove the risk of hardware malfunction and instead have a solution that is easily managed and flexible with a Web presence readily available to your users.

Some other benefits include:

  • The ability to control and manage your infrastructure while reducing cost and increasing flexibility
  • Make changes and reconfigurations on the fly
  • No more on-site hardware load balancers needed
  • Equal and efficient traffic distribution with your current infrastructure to support the highest number of end users
  • Automatic detection and repair in case of server/data center failure
