Secondary DNS

Secondary DNS that’s second to none.

As more customer, employee and partner interactions depend on web-based applications and services, DNS plays a critical role in connecting users to content; and if your DNS fails you don’t exist—digitally speaking, that is. Secondary and more broadly multi-DNS provides a cost-effective insurance policy against DNS failure, one you can’t afford to be without. And because all DNS services respond in multi-DNS architectures, the performance of resolution will also improve. Secondary or Multi-DNS is a robust DNS architecture using more than one DNS solution to promote business continuity and optimal DNS resolution performance.

Dyn’s Secondary DNS solution complements your existing DNS service, whether it’s managed in-house (on-premise) or via another managed DNS provider, providing resiliency at the DNS layer. If your primary DNS service suffers an outage or is attacked, you can count on Dyn to keep your online business up and running across the world. Secondary DNS is great way to protect and extend your previous DNS infrastructure investments. You can evaluate, pilot and implement our redundant DNS service without introducing risk or disrupting your current DNS infrastructure.

Secondary DNS reduces the risk of outages to critical services while also protecting against delays in connections to these services.

Use Cases

Always-On DNS

Run active-active, multi-DNS that competes for the fastest response across a global network

Extend existing DNS infrastructure to the cloud

Maintain your existing DNS solution, adding a managed service for redundancy and resolution outside the firewall

Replicate advanced service

Sophisticated primary-primary configurations add redundancy to advanced traffic steering

BENEFITS

Reduce outages to critical services

By maintaining DNS resolution even if one solution suffers catastrophic failure, your risk of outages to critical services is dramatically decreased.

Improve DNS resolution performance

With dual providers “competing” for resolution, your DNS resolution performance will be increased, and you benefit from the quickest response time.

Maintain business continuity and reduce risk

Ensuring your online services are “findable” by users means less risk for you, and more continuity for your customers.

An authoratitive DNS service that is “Always on."

Secondary DNS is “always on” as an additional authoritative DNS service, complementing existing infrastructure.

When an end user’s recursive server initiates a DNS request, both the existing DNS service and Dyn’s secondary DNS respond as soon as the request is received. The first response reaching the recursive server is passed back to the end user, completing the request. This effectively creates a response race for each incoming DNS request, and ensures improved performance. All domain information continues to be managed within the primary DNS service in the same manner it is configured today, and then synchronizes with the secondary service (using one of many supported protocols) to ensure both solutions return the same information to end users.

Key Secondary / Multi DNS Deployment Patterns

Primary-Secondary

The existing DNS implementation acts as the primary DNS service from a DNS records management perspective. Record updates are made to the primary service using established tools and practices. Once configured, the primary service automatically updates the secondary service using the standard DNS NOTIFY mechanism. Secondary DNS service receives updates via standard IXFR or AXFR. Both services respond to DNS queries.

Hidden Master Secondary

The existing DNS solution is deployed behind the corporate firewall and acts as the primary DNS service from a DNS records management perspective. Record updates are made to the primary service using established tools and practices. The primary service automatically updates the secondary service. Only the distributed edge of the secondary takes traffic. An additional supplementary service may be added to extend global performance and resiliency. The primary DNS service maintains control from a records management perspective to all secondaries.

Primary-Primary

Each DNS service is updated independently. Records are synchronized across services manually, with the API, or via an external application. Both services respond to DNS queries.
