How To Set Up Home Video Surveillance For Under $200
I’ve long enjoyed the comfort of knowing I have video surveillance at my house. Generally, I like it for the sheer geekiness of it, but after having my truck stolen right from my driveway even while living in a somewhat remote area, having a webcam also gives me a sense of security.
After eight long years, my then-cheap $100 web camera died, so I jumped on Amazon and bought a new one. I lucked out by not paying attention to the product details and ended up with a two pack instead. I eagerly ripped open the boxes and set them up and since my wireless router was old, I had also purchased a newer one of those as well.
With two cameras, a new router, a Dyn account and some free time in my hands, here’s how I went about setting up my own home security system.

Power Outages: Using DynDNS Pro To Get Updates Faster Than Your Power Company Can
As many of you know, the northeastern portion of the United States experienced a major winter storm this past weekend. As a result of the early snowfall, millions of people lost power at their homes and businesses — Dyn and its employees included. While this event did not have any negative effect on our services to customers, many Dyners have been staying with other employees, friends and family who do have power and heat.
However, we’ve noticed that the local power companies do not always provide timely updates on when the lights will go back on. After a few hours or days in the dark, many people start asking two questions:
- When is power going to be restored to my area?
- Does my home currently have power?
The answer to the first question is often up to your power company. Hopefully, their emergency response teams provide accurate Estimates-to-Recovery (ETR). To answer the second question, through a clever use of our DynDNS Pro service, you can set up a quick script to check from any smartphone on whether your home or business has power (and Internet).

Dyn-Novation: The Awesomeness of Internet Guide and Continue To Site
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: my parents aren’t exactly internet savvy.
They understand email, can find their way around the internet fairly easily and even play a few online games. But they also don’t understand ‘copy and paste’ in Word, downloading pictures can be tough and in general, they don’t go outside the well-beaten path of popular sites. Again, this sounds like nearly every set of parents I know, save for a bit more Facebook familiarity (just to view family pictures, of course).
But even they and their kids occasionally make mistakes by clicking on an errant link to a phishing site and going down a dark alley on a rainy night. That’s why I really love our free Internet Guide (IG) and even better, the changes we recently made to make it the best product of its kind.

You Asked, We Updated: New Dynect Zone Graphs Are Live
We had a list of feature requests from users (and from ourselves) that we wanted to incorporate into our Zone Graph reports. So with list in hand, we sent our newest Dynect developer Joe Stelmach on the hunt for the graphing software that would fulfill our needs. After exploring a half dozen alternatives, we settled on the javascript library from Highcharts JS.
And now, those new charts are live in Dynect! Here’s a breakdown of what’s new for you.
