Introducing Labs: Let’s Go Do Some Science!

DNS, Email, Labs – you’ve seen the references, you’ve read about them and you know what those first two pieces of our business are, but you might not know too much about Labs.

Labs is our technology playground: our virtual sandbox of projects, our Skunkworks. It’s the place where we do things to help make the Internet a better place for everyone. And up until now, it’s been one of the more “virtual” departments of Dyn, but that all changes today with a new addition and a familiar face that will help us form and re-ignite the Labs department.

Gray Chynoweth - Dyn

Dyn VP Gray Chynoweth Voted ICANN RrSG Chair

We love ICANN and have enjoyed being part of this organization for years. Our VP/General Counsel Gray Chynoweth has been a fixture at events, taking his trusty HD flip camera and doing interviews with some of the industry’s biggest movers and shakers. If CNBC needs a new anchor, they got one.

That’s why we’re excited to announce that Gray has been voted Executive Committee Chair of ICANN’s Registrar Stakeholder Group (RrSG).  Gray fills the role after Mason Cole vacated the position to represent the RrSG on ICANN’s Generic Name Supporting Organization Council.  The position runs until May of 2012.

DigiCert SSL - Dyn

Dyn Transitions SSL Business To DigiCert

At some point, companies figure out what they’re really good at. With us, it became clear that DNS was something we wanted to be really good at. Then came email delivery. Before we knew it, we became the leaders in Internet Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and have become pretty damn good at what we do. Major websites are up and fast. Email is delivered fast and the right way.

Along the path, we started to offer different but related services. Services like domain registration and products like Internet Guide were created. But as we grew in the DNS and email space, we discovered that we didn’t have the bandwidth to offer some of those additional services at a level that was befitting of our culture.

Instead of trying to band-aid the situation or let them die, we find ways for our customers to migrate to new services and even competitors. In certain cases, we find great partners that we can align with that become a perfect fit; a best friend in the tech space if you will.

That’s why we’re excited to announce our partnership with DigiCert (a leading U.S.-based certificate authority) who will assist in the transition and support of our SSL business, effective today.
