How This Tech Start-Up Succeeded (In Roughly 400 Words)
Dynamic Network Services, Inc (aka “Dyn” and pronounced dine) is the infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) leader, specializing in both managed DNS and Email Delivery for the enterprise client, small business and personal user.
We started in 1998 during the dot-com boom, founded by a couple college kids at WPI. The board room was the cafeteria and business meetings were held on the way to class.
Our tree will always be rooted in IaaS, which began with DNS and a problem (easy access) — one that we wanted to solve. Early adopters and donators pushed us through. We knew customer service was important and made it a cornerstone.
The solution to the problem was called DynDNS.org, a dynamic DNS service for home users to host sites on their home PC and have remote access. It grew. And grew. And grew some more. More donations came in so we could add services. Those grew as well.
It’s Evolution, Baby
As we evolved into a SaaS (software-as-a-service) model, we added a barrage of IT services geared toward the home/small business market. Presidents changed, the economy fluctuated up and down and the Internet became more essential to our everyday lives. We kept on growing.
In 2007, we launched the Dynect Platform (now DynECT Managed DNS) as a nod toward a huge need among our users: enterprise-class managed DNS. We found a sweet spot with start-ups as their stories were similar to ours. It was a risk. We kept on growing.
In 2010, we acquired a few smaller DNS companies and had an eye toward another big IaaS need: email. We offered some solutions but they weren’t robust enough. We purchased a focused email services company and enhanced our offerings to not only compete but lead in the email delivery market – just like we did with DNS.
And The Beat Goes On
We’ve done all this through bringing on passionate people that understand the vision of what we do. We listen to our customers and evolve to what they want us to be. We’ve ran and we’ve fallen down but more than 10 years later, Dyn is still here…and still growing.
But even with over 14 million users, a litany of incredible clients, awesome partners, a global network, offices in the US and UK and the best employees in tech today, we’re not done yet. There are websites that need to stay up, email that needs to get delivered and technology that we have to stay ahead of the curve on.
The next 10 years are going to be a lot of fun. If you’re a client or partner, thanks for being along for the ride. If not, there’s always a home for you at Dyn.
